Dash blinked, letting his eyes adjust. He could hear the pounding of rain on the roof and the rumble of thunder. How had he gotten here, and how had he come to be with Jill?
The last thing he remembered was going for a run before the party. He’d ridden out to the cabin with Alex, and then after setting up the decorations and food, he’d bailed for a run in the woods. Now here he was in one of the small cottages provided for shelter on pack land, with a screaming, hysterical woman.
There was no doubt that this was Jill. Her scent matched the one on Alex’s shirt. Almost immediately, it became obvious why her scent had affected him so thoroughly — she was his mate. He didn’t know how he knew it, but he did, just as Dad had told him he would. Somewhere deep inside, he felt an attachment to this woman that wasn’t from her scent alone. She was everything he’d imagined and more. Blood rushed to his cock, making the already hard member twitch; he’d gotten hard within seconds of changing back.
She must have been out in the storm, since she looked pretty bedraggled, albeit a beautiful mess. Her long, wet hair was pulled into a ponytail on the top of her head, and she was dressed in some sort of pale blue genie costume, which had almost dried, clinging to her and showing off her every curve, making his mouth water. The blouse adhered to her generous breasts and showed off her slim, bare waist. Her long, toned legs were visible through the sheer fabric covering — or, rather, hugging — them …
His mother was wrong; there was nothing understated about Jill’s looks. Her features were very sensual, and as far as he was concerned, she was one of the sexiest women he’d ever seen. The need to claim her was almost unbearable, despite her continued screaming.
God, he wished he had his brother’s power to retain human thoughts in wolf form. Maybe he could get Jill to fill in the blanks, if he could snap her out of her hysteria. At least she hadn’t run. That was a definite bonus.
He spoke in a calm, non-threatening manner. “I won’t hurt you. Please stop screaming; you’re hurting my ears. I need to know what happened.”
The shrill noise ceased, but the look in Jill’s eyes and her scent said that she was far from calm. Gulping down a deep breath, she seemed to gain some semblance of control. “What are you?”
It was pretty clear that she wasn’t going to come closer, so he dropped his hand. “I’m a werewolf.”
She blinked. “There are no such things as werewolves. They are make-believe. And I should know; I’m almost a doctor.”
“Well, doc, I hate to burst your bubble, but there are werewolves. And I should know, because not only am I one, but I’m almost a vet.”
Her mouth dropped open. “Who are you?”
“Name’s Devon Rigotti. Is that what you wanted to know?”
She nodded, looking shocked. “Why have I never heard about werewolves being real? Are there vampires, too?”
Dash chuckled. Her scent and heart rate showed she was still rattled, but you’d never know by her demeanor. She was going to make a hell of a doctor, if this was her normal way of dealing with things. “Not that I know of, but anything is possible. I imagine that if there are vampires, they guard their secret as well as we wolves do.”
She took a deep breath. “Okay, that makes sense. The medical and scientific community would want to test you to death … so to speak. I guess I’d keep my identity a secret, too. Do you eat people?”
Dash grinned. “Only beautiful women, and only if they ask.”
